Bits Per Second

Internet Speed Test

This free tool calculates your internet download speed in bits per second. It does this with only JavaScript and no Adobe Flash plugin is required.

Bit vs. Byte

One bit stores a single 0 or 1, one byte stores a group of eight bits, and one byte usually stores one letter. Most internet connections speeds are advertised in bits. For example, if you're connection is 40 Mbps (megabits) that actually means your top speed would only be about 5 MBps (megabytes).
